Wellbeing & Psychological Support for Football Players
Confidential individual support for players, clubs and academies
Behind every player is an individual.
Professional football can bring extraordinary opportunities, but it also comes with psychological pressures that can affect confidence, concentration and emotional wellbeing.
Performance expectations, injuries, transfers, selection decisions, public scrutiny and experiences away from football can all have an impact.
At Diamond Wellbeing, I provide confidential individual therapeutic support for footballers experiencing anxiety, fear, confidence difficulties and other emotional challenges — helping them manage what is happening psychologically so they can focus more fully on themselves and their game.
For football clubs, academies, Player Care and People teams looking for additional individual wellbeing support for their players.
How Club Referrals Work
Diamond Wellbeing can provide additional individual support alongside your club's existing Player Care, wellbeing, medical and performance provision.
1. Identify a need
A club may recognise that a player could benefit from additional support, or the player may request support themselves.
2. Introduce Diamond Wellbeing
The player is provided with information about the service and can decide whether they would like to engage.
3. Initial consultation
I speak with the player to understand what they are experiencing and whether my approach is appropriate for their needs.
4. Individual support
Sessions are tailored to the player and can be delivered online or in person where appropriate.
5. Continued support or onward referral
Further sessions can be arranged according to the individual's needs. Where another form of professional support would be more appropriate, this will be discussed with the player.
Flexible support around the demands of professional football
Sessions can be offered online or in person, providing flexibility around:
Training schedules
Match commitments
Travel
Loans and transfers
Relocation
Changing club commitments
Online sessions also mean that geographical changes don't necessarily have to interrupt an established therapeutic relationship.
Looking for additional wellbeing support for your players?
If you work within Player Care, Player Wellbeing, People & Culture, HR, an academy or another player-support role, please contact Diamond Wellbeing to discuss your requirements.
Individual professional players and those supporting a player are also welcome to enquire.

A player can be physically prepared and technically capable but find that psychologically something is getting in the way.
Fear of making another mistake can lead to overthinking.
An injury can leave a player physically recovered but apprehensive about returning.
A transfer can mean adapting to an entirely new environment while facing immediate expectations to perform.
Abuse from spectators or online can provoke understandable anger or anxiety that doesn't simply disappear when the match ends.
And sometimes what is affecting a player has nothing to do with football at all.
The ability may still be there. The player may simply need support with the psychological and emotional response that is making it harder to access.
-
Every player is different, so support is tailored to the individual and what they are experiencing.
Players may seek support for:
Performance anxiety and overthinking
Fear of making mistakes
Loss of confidence or poor form
Pressure surrounding selection and competition for places
Injury, rehabilitation and fear of reinjury
Penalties and other high-pressure situations
Transfers and adapting to a new club or country
Contract and career uncertainty
Crowd hostility and spectator abuse
Racist or discriminatory abuse
Social media and public criticism
Anger and difficult emotional responses
Stress and anxiety outside football
Bereavement, relationship or family difficulties
Support isn't about removing all pressure. Pressure is an inevitable part of professional sport.
The focus is on helping the individual respond to that pressure differently and reducing the extent to which anxiety, fear or difficult emotional responses interfere with their wellbeing, confidence or concentration.
-
Hypnotherapy can be used therapeutically to work with anxiety, fear, confidence and automatic emotional responses associated with particular situations and experiences.
My approach is individual rather than prescriptive.
Two players can describe the same difficulty but have very different reasons for experiencing it.
A loss of confidence might have begun with an injury for one player, a significant mistake for another and sustained criticism or abuse for someone else.
By understanding what is driving the individual's response, sessions can be tailored to what that particular player needs.
Depending on the circumstances, our work may focus on reducing anxiety, addressing fear, working with difficult previous experiences, developing confidence, managing emotional responses and helping the player redirect attention towards the things they can control.
-
There may be times when a player doesn't feel comfortable discussing everything they are experiencing with someone directly involved in their selection, training or career progression.
Having access to an independent practitioner gives players another source of support outside the immediate football environment.
Sessions provide a private space in which the individual can talk openly about what they are experiencing and work therapeutically with the underlying difficulty.
Confidentiality and its professional limits are explained clearly to the player before therapeutic work begins.
Where a player's needs fall outside my professional scope, I recognise the importance of signposting or referral to an appropriately qualified healthcare or mental health professional.
-
Moving clubs can be one of the biggest transitions in a footballer's career.
Even when the transfer is positive, a player may suddenly be adapting to a new manager, coaching team, teammates, playing style and expectations.
Moving to another part of the country or overseas can add relocation, family disruption, cultural adjustment or homesickness.
A significant transfer fee or increased profile can bring another layer of expectation, with the player feeling that they need to prove their value immediately.
Individual support can provide somewhere to process that transition, manage anxiety and pressure and develop confidence as the player establishes themselves within their new environment.
-
Being medically ready to play doesn't always mean a player feels psychologically ready.
Following an injury, some players can experience fear of reinjury, hesitation during particular movements or tackles, reduced confidence in their body or anxiety about returning to their previous level of performance.
Therapeutic support can help a player work with these fears alongside the physical rehabilitation and medical support provided by their club.
-
Footballers can be exposed to intense public scrutiny and, at times, unacceptable behaviour.
Racist or discriminatory abuse, hostility from spectators, personal insults and online abuse can understandably trigger anger, anxiety, fear or frustration.
The purpose of therapeutic support is never to minimise this behaviour or teach a player simply to tolerate it.
Clubs and relevant authorities retain responsibility for responding appropriately to racism, discrimination and abuse.
My role can be to support the individual with the psychological and emotional impact of what they have experienced, helping them process the event and work towards preventing the emotional response from continuing to dominate their thoughts and concentration.
